Cipriani Wall Street | 55 Wall Street, New York

The Planning and Visual Education Partnership (PAVE) held its 18th Annual Gala Wednesday, Dec. 3, in New York City, raising a record $300,000 to support design education and to offer scholarships for emerging leaders in the retail design and visual merchandising industry. The high-energy event attracted 850 influential retailers, designers and industry suppliers such as Ralph Lauren, Macy’s/Bloomingdale’s, Target, Chute Gerdeman, Bernstein Display, Fleetwood, Callison and Amuneal.

PAVE is a non-profit educational partnership for students in the retail environments industry and was founded to foster development in merchandising and retail design and planning. The Gala benefits PAVE’s educational program, showcases select student work and honors industry talent.

During the awards segment of the Gala, PAVE recognized the winners of the 20th Annual Student Design Competition, sponsored by REI, awarding $25,000 in grants to students and schools. First place winners include Katie Costa from the University of Cincinnati (Store Design Category) and Kylie O’Keefe from the University of Cincinnati (Visual Merchandising Category). This year’s winners faced a competitive field of more than 500 entries, including more than 400 submissions in the Store Design Category.

Other awards presented at the gala included PAVE’s Rising Star Award, which was granted to Sonja Haviland of Bergmeyer Associates.

The PAVE Gala 18th Edition artwork created by Wests Design Consultants inspired the 2014 student gallery project. College students were challenged to create original pieces arranging any quantity of circular shapes and dots in any size. Students were limited to warm metallic colors only and were encouraged to create designs in the medium of their choice, including paper, fabric, wire and even money. Participating schools included New York’s Fashion Institute of Technology, LIM College and Sydney TAFE.

The 2014 gala was co-chaired by PAVE Gala Vice President Bill Goddu of Fleetwood, PAVE Vice President Harry Cunningham of Vera Bradley, and Denise Waldo of Lozier Store Fixtures, LLC.
