Retail Design Celebration Raises $170,000

Wed., Dec. 4, 2013 | Cipriani Wall Street | 55 Wall Street, New York

The Planning and Visual Education Partnership (PAVE) held its 17th Annual Gala Wednesday, Dec. 4, in New York City. PAVE is an educational partnership for students in the retail environments industry and was founded to foster development in merchandising and retail design and planning. The Gala benefits PAVE’s educational programs and showcases select student work. The Gala also serves as an awards ceremony for student and industry talent. In total, the Gala collected $170,000 in funding to support design education.

The event attracted 790 influential retailers, designers and industry suppliers such as Saks Fifth Avenue, Godiva Chocolatier, Macy’s, Bloomingdale’s, Target, Chute Gerdeman, Callison and Architectural Systems, Inc. Six students with winning projects in the Student Design Competition and four educators attended through seats donated by industry companies.

Work from the 2013 Student Gallery Project was showcased during the Gala, featuring mannequins inspired by The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s “Punk: Chaos to Couture” exhibit. Mannequins featured apparel and accessories created from using only the colors black, white and hot pink by students from the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising in California, New York’s Fashion Institute of Technology and LIM College along with Radford University in Virginia.

During the awards segment, PAVE recognized the winners of the 19th annual Student Design Competition, sponsored by Sephora, awarding $25,000 in grants to students and schools. First place winners include Quianna Teixeira from Humber College (Store Design Category) and Lauren Ferrell from the University of Cincinnati (Visual Merchandising Category). This year’s winners faced a competitive field of more than 500 entries, including 400 plus in the Store Design Category.

Other awards presented at the gala included PAVE’s Rising Star Award, which was granted to Andrea Buccasso of FITCH. DDI magazine’s Winning Windows Awards for excellence in New York City holiday window design were presented to Macy’s Herald Square (Platinum Award), Bergdorf Goodman (Gold Award) and Anthropologie Rockefeller Center (Silver Award). Additionally, VMSD magazine’s Excellence in Visual Merchandising and Design Awards, honoring top New York City retail design, were presented to Hugo Boss, Tommy Bahama and Saks Fifth Avenue.

The 2013 gala was co-chaired by PAVE Gala Vice President Bill Goddu, Fleetwood Fixtures, and PAVE board members Harry Cunningham, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Denise Waldo, Leggett & Platt Store Fixtures.
